Well, I feel a whole lot better today. This was my first sick day in 7 years, and the previous one wasn't even a real one, I was going to an interview for another job. :-)

This morning, I got up to go to the washroom, and when I came back and lifted the covers, I noticed that my shadow was still in bed. "Hmm, that's odd", I thought. When I lied down, I realized this wasn't my shadow. I felt a lot better, but this apparently came through by sweating the evil out. And boy, did I sweat it. Moved to the other side. The bedroom had a nice, um, manly aroma when I finally got up. Much ventilation was done.

I was pondering raiding the grocery store a bit, but was dissuaded by [livejournal.com profile] thebabynancy, who kindly offered to make a home delivery for me, as she and [livejournal.com profile] hub_ were already going to the grocery store. Thanks! Got me some chicken soup and "French Vanilla" ice cream (which I am enjoying right now, soothing my throat), goodness!

Niftily lent him the car to bring back his groceries, carefully mentioning that he should park it on the side of the street that wasn't forbidden tomorrow, so I can sleep in comfortably, hehe! He brought me back the keys not long ago, and he's claiming the car is in one piece, all good. ;-)

I was pondering going to bed a few minutes ago, while getting the ice cream, and my mind segued into thinking that with my future travel/moving plans, I could now very well justify making my next computer a laptop! Now, I only need a ton of money, and I'm all set! Ahh, wireless Internet in my bed...

Have you noticed how many xterms (or windows of any sort) I have going? The answer is usually "exactly one". With the largest font I have available (which I also happen to be using), such an xterm is 823 by 514. Which is less than 1024x768. That's how I can go by.

Me, I always suffer when I have to carry around a 8 pound laptop, plus necessary accessories (power adapter and assorted crap) on foot for a week when I go out at a conference. That's what the stupid laptops are made for! Oh yeah, it had a 1600x1200 or something ridiculous 16 inch screen. But the thing was a freakin' boulder. It also had next to no power management, and rather silly battery autonomy (but I could play Quake III on it!). When I need a desktop (or a rock), I'll get one.

If it wasn't for difficulties with the support for the built-in wireless and the one lonely mouse button, I'd be ALL OVER IT!

Well, I'm pondering being crazy enough to just run Mac OS X. :-)

Well my one complaint about tiny screens would be that it usually comes with an equally tiny keyboard. Yucky. Of course, you could always solve that by bringing around a keyboard with you.. but hey, if that doesn't defeat the purpose of portability then I don't know what does..

As someone who owns a tiny laptop and an extremely unusual desktop keyboard, I maintain that any keyboard can be fully gotten used to in a few days to a week of typing on it. You just have to, like, try.

My laptop's small keys messed me up for a few days, but now I'm faster on it than I am on just about anything else. (shrug)

(Clarification: Obviously a different key layout would take longer. You won't learn Dvorak in a week. But qwerty to qwerty, just changing the shape a little, shouldn't really be a huge hurdle.)

Geh.

Well laptop keyboards also lack the number pad (which some might consider evil anyway.. but I like and use it)..

One good thing, however, is that I don't know of any laptop keyboards that have the Ctrl and Caps Lock key switched. *whew* *grump* Not that it couldn't be changed should somebody want to bind the keys differently. Fools, I say!

Anyway, my sister did have a teensy little laptop and typing on it was not fun, it seems like my hands are all squished together. =/ While I could get used to it, I think I'll stick to my normal sized keyboard, thank you very much. =)

I'm looking at iBook size, which isn't "sub-notebook", but is at the very smallest end of normal laptops. Something like [livejournal.com profile] dcoombs's laptop would be a sub-notebook and have a specially tiny keyboard.

Ever seen the old "butterfly" IBM laptops? They had a fold out full-size keyboard!
