After writing my post yesterday, went and started watching Appleseed. It's all right, as far as anime goes (I'm not a big fan), with some nice cybernetically enhanced combat, hot babes and what-nots, the usual. Not done, though, as I almost fell asleep (wasn't that boring, but I was tired!), I'll go and finish that after this post...

But I'm just back from watching Closer with [livejournal.com profile] azrhey. Now, IMDB puts it down as "Drama/Romance", but I laughed so much during this movie, it almost felt as one of these romantic comedies who just show you just how bad the protagonists can screw up, and it's so hilarious. Except I think that wasn't supposed to happen here, they were serious about it.

Highly recommended for those who think monogamy is simpler, in any case. Oh, and there's very scantily clad Natalie Portman, so bad can it possibly be?

Hey Pierre. Been a while since we spoke in person but I'm feeling chatty tonight.
Now I don't mean to be critical of your lifestyle but I think you may be slightly off the mark when you imply that monogamy isn't as simple as polyamory.
Having tried a little of both my experience has been that poly is much more complicated than monogamy. When you consider that interpersonal relationships are not always easy on an individual basis I think that adding others just multiplies the complexity. And with more than one SO and the potential for jealousy and other emotional reactions it may move from multiple to exponential.
Not to say that some are very capable of managing it but I would be very wary of implying simplicity in a poly relationship.

My 2 cents since we haven't spoken in ages.

PS - Natalie Portman is no Angelina Jolie!

Aye.

To this day my father swears he dated Audrey's daughter despite the fact she doesn't have one.
Keep in mind he smokes tons of pot and drinks heavily! :)

Personnaly, I beleive polyamoury sucks as much as monogamy.

*shrug* from the little I have read and talked with adepts of both cults (*snicker*), both have good, both have bad, and neither is good for _moi_.

I think most problems in interpersonal relationships come from two things:jealousy, possessiveness and communication ( yup, can't count!).

*shrug* To each their own, whatever works for you is good as far as it is respectful to everyone envolved. Personally I am weird enough that someone having front row tix for a match Benfica vs Sporting is a valid reason for break up, where sex with other adult human beings is not :)

PS - Natalie Portman is no Monica Belucci either!

Lack of falls into the larger Communication Group.

Because people will talk, some even will talk a lot, but they will say what the other wants to hear, or what they think what the other wants to hear instead of what they think.

No, I agree with you! I wasn't implying that poly was easier (not at all!_, just that monogamy wasn't necessarily as easy as some people seem to make it.

This movie made quite a riot out of monogamy, I have to say. If you like both romantic drama and romantic comedy, be sure to catch it, you'll like it either way!

Okay, Natalie Portman isn't the same as Angelina, for sure, but I wouldn't kick her out of bed either! ;-)

Who said monogamy was easy? It's a relationship like any other with all the difficulty that entails.

As for Ms. Portman, I think she may be a little young for me.

Key word: "Relationships". It's easy for people to suck when they try to get along, especially at the quantum level. Whatever or however you do it, you will most likely encounter problems. There is no argument for who's got the better way of life. Gays, lesbians, straights, monogamous, polygamous, they all have their share of problems.

Also... Bring me Elizabeth Hurley any fucking time thankyou. That British accent just makes it the better.

Ok.... this little game has actually sparked a good deal of discussion back home, and the truth is that both me and my girlfriend just can't find anything better than Miss Casta. And though personal tastes cannot truly be discussed, I'm still going to try and find something better and see if I could find something YOU would like better than what you've had to offer. I suggest you do the same :) This is worthy of another post, but for the sake of making this thread even longer, here is someone I can't understand why was left out of the discussion.

Sad that I could not really find a better picture on short notice.

Closer was first written as a play before it was made into a movie... and I saw in as a play before it was ever made into a movie, too...

i haven't seen the movie yet.

but i really liked the play. it made me cry...

i saw it quite a while back...4 years ago at least, i would think. probably longer.

Date: 2005-08-31 08:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pphaneuf.livejournal.com
Yeah, I had heard of it being a play. Apparently, you're more in the "romantic drama" camp, if it did make you cry and you liked it.

The movie seemed very weird to me, it was like some sort of romantic-oriented "American Pie" movie with grown ups and good acting. But like I said, I don't think this was supposed to happen, and I don't know if it was also in the play and it's just me who's weird (which wouldn't exactly be big news...).

I mean... When Dan gets cheated on by Anna with Larry just this one time, he's all outraged, "how could you do this?"... Well, erm, how about in exactly the same way you've done it to him for a whole damned year, how's that? Who would have thought the tables could be turned? Gah.

Date: 2005-08-31 08:30 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] girlintheclouds.livejournal.com
well... it was a long time ago that i saw it, and i don't know if the way the movie ends is different than the way the play ends.

but it was also very funny, i thougt. i remember laughing a fair bit, too. so maybe it's like that on purpose?

does someone die near the end of the movie? that's why i cried. well, it's not like a sobbed or anything like that. but there was some tear-shedding.

Date: 2005-08-31 08:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pphaneuf.livejournal.com
Nope, no one dies... I suppose you should watch it, it's probably got a few differences that might be confusing.

What [livejournal.com profile] gregorama said.

Also... You can choose to do what you want, if it makes you happy that's great and you KNOW that you have my blessings. But because it's makes you happier than what others are doing does not mean that everyone else is wrong. I'm sure you can think outside the box here and imagine that the world those not revolve around what you think is right for you.

And when you are done with that Appleseed DVD, you know who to come and look for. Pawning is definitly an option.

Date: 2005-08-30 06:01 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pphaneuf.livejournal.com
Oh, sure doesn't make other people wrong! I agree completely with you on that.

But I maintain that this movie was hilarious. The characters were so bad and vile at times that it could only be a parody, I could only laugh at them saying what I thought was the worst possible thing, then proving me wrong by saying something even stupider.

I'm done with Appleseed. It got the huge "let's blow up the whole city" ending that's a requisite of anime movies, much to my dismay. And I don't think I say that too often, but there wasn't enough of the love backstory. I always found the relationship between Deunan and Briareos interesting. I won't be pawning it, but it can be lended!

You want a kick in the arse to get it over to Grumpy's tonight?

Date: 2005-08-30 07:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pdage.livejournal.com
If by Lend you mean Lend forever and don't expect to ever see it again, then sure! Haha. Also, I keep running into your indeed crumy copie of Life of Brian. It's there in my "this does not belong to me" shelve space just so you know.

I know that Anime can suck at times. They can have their very bored tried and true paths just like most amercian action movies. For me it's the visual flair these things can bring. I just love to "watch". I've stopped listnening to most Anime movies I have. I like the fact that they don't have that many limitations when it comes to represent something that is near impossible to imagine on your own. Anyway I admit that the stories don't really surprise me anymore (I was back when Akira came out). Nowadays, I just like to pop one of those babies in the background as I do other things around the house.

In some other cases you just end up with something beautifull and imaginative, something that our own movie industry would never dare try to compare with because their pocket books are as tightly shut as their minds. Case in point, Princess Mononoke and especially Spirited Away. Those are actually better in French btw, especially Princess.

I'm starting to think that Grumpy's is a true possiblity for tonight. I'd need times and locations though. Not sure I'll bring my camera though (seems like taking pictures is a normal thing over there).

Date: 2005-08-30 08:17 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] pphaneuf.livejournal.com
No, no, no, not "lend forever"! Also, that "Life of Brian" is yours, I did give it away! I have the better deluxe version, remember? ;-)

I get bored by the big explosion ending. It's as if they can't pull off low-key dramatism, they have to go all epic all the time, and it gets old. Me, I liked the end of "Kill Bill", for example, as a classic example of low-key, and I thought it was very refreshing, if only a bit anti-climatic. But these anime movies, they just have to blow up the whole damned planet every single time, with a gun that bigger and more ridiculous than anything you've ever seen, including in any previous anime movie (which is saying a lot).

"Princess Mononoke" was pretty good, but I haven't seen "Spirited Away", maybe I should. I really loved "Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence". No big blowing up of anything at the end. Just a nice firefight and some hacking.

That'd be cool if you could come over to Grumpy's! We're there around 9pm, and it's on Bishop, between René-Levesque and Ste-Catherine. It's the pub closest to Ste-Catherine, has a small terrasse in front. I'm bringing my camera, feel free to bring a compactflash.
