Adventures!

Much happened. There was (and still is, to some degree) blahness, so in my usual not so good way, I didn't write. But now, that was just too much of an action-packed week-end (relatively speaking, for my sorry little expat ass, as this is merely "the usual" for those of you still reading this in Montreal, I'm sure!).
I decided Friday that I'd go out. Not content with that, I also decided that I'd do it in my own particular fashion of completely disorganized randomness, going with the spur of the moment.
I went to the Beaucoup, which was pretty nice, albeit quite small, with an excellent DJ. I tried a vodka-tonic, which I had never had before, and found that I liked them. You can already see that this can't be leading anywhere good, can't you? ;-)
Then, I headed over to some other bar/pub kind of place that I don't remember the name, on the way to Place St-Pierre. Which is a bit silly on my part, because while quite crowded and smoky, it was good music, and cheerful crowd, singing along to the Sex Pistols and so on. It said "Friday: Indie/Pop/60's" on the sign, but there I was, cheering to late 70's punk. I'm not complaining, although not precisely what it said on the label, it was good stuff.
My next stage was to go to the Place St-Pierre proper, as there's a bunch of places there. I entered the Bar Basque, which I've been to during the day and I find is a nice place to chill, but it seems to suck at night. Dance floor with two rotating strobes, crappy low-grade dance music, no actual DJ in sight, that kind of suck. Walked right out.
On the Place St-Pierre, I saw a group of drunken people apparently headed somewhere else, so, in my fashion of randomness, I followed them, of course. Eventually, in their flailing about, talking about the political program they would have if they were elected president (which included things such as outlawing bad music, if I remember, and "a few" other crazy things), they noticed me and asked me for my opinion on the matter, which I happily contributed. Talked to them some more, and turns out they were actually headed home, as they were unfortunately working the next day. So wished them a good night and headed some other way.
My final stop for the night was the Shanghai, a gay club that is getting taken over by heteros. Adequate dancing music, didn't seem so classy, but I did dance there until something like 3:30. There might even have been girls trying to get close to me, but in my own self-confidence lacking way, I figured they probably were more likely cramped for space. I was also asked for a light a number of times, and reflecting back on the moment, it might have been a bit more specific than it needed to be (as in, there was another guy right in her face with a lit smoke and the lighter still in his hand). A number of times, I found myself thinking that laying down some Tiga would have worked really nicely, but no, some other generic, merely adequate dance music came on.
While I already noticed that I tend to avoid ogling women when I'm with
azrhey, it's not just out of an intent on focusing my attention on who I'm with (although there is that), it seems that I hardly do it when I'm by myself as well. My shyness and lack of self-confidence annoys me greatly, sometimes.
I'm not sure how this whole plan was smart, since the very next day, I was off for more adventures, as I had a ticket to see LCD Soundsystem in Tournefeuille. This is my second time going to a show there, which is out of town (a bit like Lachine, but with the not-so-nearby metro closing at 20h), and I used the same plan as before: hook up with random people at the show to get a ride back. The opening act (Minitel, from Bordeaux) was replaced at the last minute by an odd, but yet catchy singer calling herself Planningtorock. She had no musicians, but was singing and rapping to recorded music in front of a projection screen, all dressed in white clothes (so that it projected on her too), wearing strange and interesting headgear for some particular songs. I found LCD Soundsystem to be quite good, despite a really lousy sound quality. More girls asked me for light.
My plan not only worked, but actually scored me a fairly interesting group, who were into producing small acts in the Toulouse area, and were thus pretty well informed of the musical going-ons, as well as of a rather cool place to hang out, the Café Populaire. Most of them worked the next day, but one didn't and took me there, where he found some more of his friends, and much fun was had. I ordered a Guinness, and they had some issues with the tap (they don't serve much of it?), so to make up for the long time it took serving it, I got a free shot of whiskey, which wasn't half bad! A Spanish girl got me a pint and tried to convince me that daylight savings aren't that bad. Once more, I didn't have a light.
When they were left, I headed to a party I saw announced by the group who organized the iLiKETRAiNS concert that I liked a while ago, and it turns out it seemed like a nice party but way too smoky. I can tolerate pretty high levels of smokiness, but this was just off the charts, like a fog. The music was good and the people friendly, but I just couldn't stand it, so I left. Just down the same street, there was the Lolita Café, a lesbian bar, so I decided I'd go decide whether the boys or the girls have the best DJ. Well, there, the DJ did put some Tiga, so I danced my heart out and had a lot of fun. A girl with a nice hat was being silly with some other girl, so I laughed. She looked at me in an insulted way, and asked me if I was making fun of her, so I laughed some more and told her that I thought they were cute, and complimented her choice of headgear. She smiled right back, and I danced with their group until I left, at something like 5 in the morning. I did not get asked for light, heh!
Here are some of the things I learned that weekend:
Also, on another note, it's off to Pamplona, Spain by train with
azrhey tomorrow morning, to meet with apenwarr. And at the end of April, it'll be off to Copenhagen, Denmark to visit
skjalm, and have even more adventures!

Here are some of the things I learned that weekend:
- Vodka-tonics are nice.
- Leffe, while good, doesn't really do it when you're in the mood for Guinness.
- When following random people, sometimes they're just going home.
- I should get a lighter.
Also, on another note, it's off to Pamplona, Spain by train with

Date: 2007-03-31 12:07 am (UTC)Well, if you do decide to ogle women when you're in Denmark I reserve the right to ogle
If/when you've given more thought to what you want to see, poke me and I'll look into the options. I'd definitely say that a cold beer in Nyhavn would be worth considering.
Other than that there are bars, museums and (since I recall you being here on May 1st) the international workers day with speeches and lots of drinking around Copenhagen. I've never actually went to any of the political stuff myself (and don't need this kind of excuse to just sit around and drink beer) but if you'd like to see it I'm game.

Date: 2007-03-31 06:36 am (UTC)We got ourselves a tourist guide for Copenhagen, and
I like making photos, but looking at that link you gave, that shouldn't be a problem! A cold beer (or two) is definitely worth considering, particularly in such a nice place! I'm not big on going to political rallies and such, don't need the excuse either (I'm more one to talk politics around coffee or beer!).
