Ahem. Various cards expire sometimes. Often on your birthday, isn't that funny? Should get that fixed.

Meh, money is tight, and it sucks, but that's not new. I'd like a new lens, to be able to cover stagework more effectively. I'd like a quiet computer that wouldn't put out heat like mad like this one. I'd like a nice little laptop to cuddle up in bed with, to code and chat with people. I'd like spare money to make sure everything is in order and not have to worry.

Oh well.

I think I'll take some vacation and I'll write software. I'm odd that way.

Can't see what's so odd about that - I'm tempted to do the same.

Any particular projects you want done or is it just general coding?

I have a few solutions.

First you can switch you paycheck with mine

For the laptop, you know how has two. The old runs Linux I have been told, so I suspect you could just borrow it, it wouldn't make a difference, and you'd have a laptopt that is more powerful and recent than the one I'n currently typing on. Yes, I'm "software engineer" and I have a 5 years old laptop almost as my mine machine (used to be my main machine a few month back).

Third, for the lenses, do you want my slow lenses ?

I think you should renew your license ASAP, Pion... those things expire on your bday for a reason yanno... like because most people remember it expires on their bday?!

Indeed. I've got a old Thinkpad (2 inches thick!), but the only moving part in it is the hard drive (and a fancy flash disk will fix that good).

No sound, little heat, it is a perfect summer computer.

SAAQ employees returned to work yesterday... So he may have a good excuse.

In the smaller project category, I'd hack an RSS aggregator that stores its feeds in HTML messages in IMAP folders. This way, I could start using RSS again (a huge timesaver for me!), and the read/unread status of each entry would be synchronized between home and work.

In the bigger projects, I would give a kick to XPLC, and I'd like to start on a high-performance event-driven I/O framework which would use XPLC.

Ahh, see, the magic trick is that switching our paychecks would be putting me at the advantage right now. You thought you were making a good deal, eh? Normally, you'd be, but not now. That's the only part that truly suck at the moment (mind you, unlike you had, I at least have a paycheck! so not so bad), the rest might be more whining about luxury items... But hey, it's my LJ, I get to whine all I want!

Who has two? [livejournal.com profile] azrhey? The old laptop has already been taken over (and she runs Linux on the new one, as she tries pretty hard to use that as her main OS). My main (and only working) machine is about 5 years old too, but it was a cheap Athlon system I put together, so I paid way less than you, and it's still a pretty powerful system (Athlon 1200 with 768 megs of memory). It's just hot and noisy as hell. I'll live.

That's the trick, for what I want to cover, I'll need a fast lens that's no more than 35mm or so, preferably less. I think I'll borrow mister Z's 24mm/f2.8 again, despite slowish focusing. I'll have to be clever, but it should work out.

I'd get a used laptop as a silent server, but I'd have to figure out having two ethernets, and that might cost me more than the laptop. ;-)

Damn, those are all serious projects that do Something Good for (a subset of) humanity. I never seem to get around to doing more than fiddling with games and robots. Which is fun so it's okay, I guess ;-)

Well, I was doing it for my own selfish needs, which included fun, so don't attribute me too much goodness in doing Something Good for humanity!

The problems with the computer is the heat that it puts out (when it came out, it was a very powerful machine), so it tends to blow up random parts once in a while during summer. If I took all the money I put on repairing that box, I could probably have gotten me a Mac Mini, easily.

And the noise is pretty crappy, as I can hear it from my bed, despite the computer and the bed being the two farthest objects in the whole apartment.

As I said, I'll survive, but if that computer decides to burn its video card or a power supply again...

Well, cuddling with humans is just a permanent thing (I don't do stuffed animals much, although I like the cat roaming around).

It's more of an "instead of going to work" thing.
