A while ago I heard that the sound sample came into existence after a guy had tried to describe how his (presumably defect) car engine sounded. According to the story he had made a post in a news group where he had written down how it sounded... and, naturally, someone had taken a microphone and said the words he had written...
Don't know if it's true or not, but it's not unlikely and it's kind of a funny story anyhow ;-)
